You just got engaged. I'm going to be honest with you: I'm a romantic, and this is my favorite thing I do. Before the planning takes over, let's get out somewhere beautiful and take photos that actually look like the two of you — the way he makes you laugh, the way she leans into him without thinking about it.

I'll photograph your engagement session anywhere around Lynchburg: up on the Blue Ridge Parkway when the light goes gold, downtown by the river, or out at Peaks of Otter if you want mountains in every frame. Peaks of Otter and Sharp Top — the classic Blue Ridge view. Best when you don't mind a short drive and a little wind.
Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks — Thunder Ridge, near milepost 74.7, gives you open sky and layers of mountains behind you.
Riverfront Park, downtown Lynchburg — brick, water and warm evening light, close to everything.
Old City Cemetery — an accredited arboretum with roses, brick paths and enormous old trees. Quietly one of the prettiest spots in town.
Somewhere that's yours — the trail you hiked on your first date, your front porch, the coffee shop. Those always photograph best.

Engagement session questions, answered

Where are the best engagement photo spots near Lynchburg?

Peaks of Otter and the Sharp Top trail for mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks for big open sky, Riverfront Park for downtown brick and water, and the Old City Cemetery arboretum for roses and old trees. Tell me your story and I will tell you which one fits it - and I will factor in the light and the drive so you are not guessing.

What time of day should we shoot?

The hour before sunset is the softest light of the day, and it is what I plan most sessions around. Sunrise is quieter if you want an overlook to yourselves.

We are awkward in front of a camera. Is that a problem?

Everybody says that! And no, it is not a problem. I give you something to do rather than a pose to hold, so you end up looking at each other instead of at me. The first ten minutes are the awkward ones, and then you forget I am there.

What should we wear?

Pick two outfits you already feel good in, and keep the colors in the same family so you look like you belong together. Bring layers if we are heading up to an overlook, because the mountains run colder than town.

Do you also photograph the wedding?

We met at Liberty - can we shoot on campus?

Short answer yes, with one step in between. Liberty's photography policy means a campus session has to be cleared with the University's Marketing Office ahead of time, and I take care of that part - being a Liberty student is a credential, not a key. I will tell you early if a spot is not going to work rather than let you build the day around it. There is a page just for Liberty couples, linked above and below.
