Berks County photos — from the Pagoda down to the covered bridge.

Berks County gives you a skyline you can shoot from above, which is rarer than it sounds. I'd love to photograph your session here — a wedding, an engagement, senior portraits, your family, or branding photos for your business.

Pottstown is my home base, and Berks is close to home. Reading, Wyomissing, Birdsboro, Boyertown, Kutztown — I'll come to you. Natural light, no stiff posing, and a photographer who will absolutely make a fool of herself to get you laughing.

Berks County spots I'd love to shoot

  • The Reading Pagoda, up on Mount Penn — seven stories standing 886 feet above the city, one of only three of its kind in the United States, with the whole valley opening out behind you. One thing worth knowing before you plan around it: the City has put gates and cameras on Skyline Drive with controlled access, so we plan the timing rather than showing up and hoping.
  • Wertz's Red Covered Bridge, at the Berks County Heritage Center on the Tulpehocken — an 1867 bridge, and the longest single-span covered bridge left in Pennsylvania. Red boards, the creek, and the Gruber Wagon Works next door. It's a portrait backdrop, and I want to be clear about this: the Berks park system does not permit weddings on any of its bridges, this one included. Anything organized goes through the Gring's Mill office.
  • Nolde Forest, south of Reading on PA 625 — 665 acres of deciduous woods and conifer plantations with creekside trails, and a 1926 Tudor mansion above the old sawmill pond. There are accessible trails at the mansion and the historic sawmill. The mansion holds the park offices and isn't open to the public except on open-house days, so we're shooting the outside and the grounds. Park-office check-in ahead of time, same as any state park.
  • Hopewell Furnace, Elverson — a whole 19th-century iron-making village, preserved. Stone buildings, timber, and open ground that turns moody the second the sun drops. It's a National Park Service site, so I check their current photography rules before we book it.

Berks County questions, answered

Do you shoot in Berks County?

I'd love to. Pottstown is my home base and Berks is close to home, so it's an easy yes for me, and I travel further when a session is worth the drive. Just ask.

Do I need a permit at the Heritage Center or the covered bridge?

Anything organized at the Berks County Heritage Center gets arranged through the Gring's Mill park office, and I handle that. One rule you'll want before you plan a ceremony, though: the county does not permit weddings on any of its bridges, and that includes Wertz's Red Covered Bridge and the bridge at Gring's Mill. It's a beautiful backdrop for portraits. It just isn't a place to say your vows.

When's the light best at the Pagoda?

The hour before sunset, with the city and the valley opening out behind you. That's the frame people picture when they think of Mount Penn, and I'm not going to pretend I'm cool about it. Remember the Skyline Drive access when we pick a time, and we'll be fine.
